The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) was established in 1977 by young college students. Through the martyrdom of their leader Meena, they made a vehicle for change for the women against society and political oppression and Soviet occupation. RAWA set up literacy institutions for women and men who wanted to learn. When the Tailban came 10 years later the RAWA showed itself to be fearless feminist, a human and a political rights organization. The RAWA continue to be a beacon of hope and a testimony to the true pretence of Islam even at the cost of their own lives.
